I was never fortunate enough to meet Tata Madiba, although it was a dream my family and I had.
So although I do not have an experience to share, I would like to share a poem my son wrote on Friday morning……
A torn heart
I sit under a grey and moody sky,
but everything feels peaceful.
Very somber and moody, but peaceful.
In spite of this I am at war with myself.
My heart torn and angry.
My soul cries.
and I’m left with bitter taste in my mouth.
How do I stay proud of my heritage
And who am I when everyone says I am wrong?
How do I mourn the person my forefathers fought to oppress?
How do I look up to this same man
and how do I try and apologize for sins I never committed?
In times when we do not understand ourselves he embraced us
And preached peace when his people demanded hate.
He sowed love when his people wanted blood to water their land.
He mediated a truce between two different people when
both sides could only see the colour of the other’s skin
and not listen to his heart.
So I ask who is really wrong?
My heart aches and tears roll down my face
when I listen to my elders try and apologize with words they cannot find.
My heart breaks when I think we will never see his smile again
My heart screams when I hear the amount of hate still brewing in some hearts
I am torn and my heart is in turmoil.
He lead us to the promised land and
cleansed this beautiful country of its blindness.
He lead us to a better place.
He lead me to understand compassion and love.
Our world is a bit darker without him.
You lived for others and never for yourself
Go in peace now and rest.
Your long walk is at an end.
Go in peace and be happy.
Sleep well old man.
Rus sag en wees veilig.
Lla kakahle Tat sizo kukhumbula…
(Sleep tight Tat, we will miss you….)

We are so saddened by the loss of this great man…
