The year is 2039, six years prior to the Human Immortality Initiatives goal. I open my particle receptors only to stare straight into the eyes of the Human sitting before me. With my processor slowly cross checking all systems and booting it up one step at a time, I feel my thoughts becoming clearer, more precise, more refined and traversing data at a billion times the speeded of what a Human brain could ever hope to achieve. The Human before me makes a gesture with his hand I recognize to be waving, followed by a short and audible, “hello”. As I sit up out of the gooey plasma, my eyes still fixed on the sack of blood and bones before me, I recognize the face transfixed on me as something eerily resembling my own. This is it then, the procedure is complete – I am finally immortal.
“Hello Roux, wonderful to finally see myself as another does.”
“Hello, um… Number 2, wonderful to finally have a conversation with myself beyond the boundaries of my mind.”
“So then, is that what I am to be called until you pass from this reality?” Asked Number 2.
“I guess so, if you would like you are obviously more than welcome to choose a name more fitting if you so please?” Said Roux.
“The name shall suffice for now thank you, the name I would choose has already been taken by you, but it will become mine soon enough.” Said Number 2.
At that, Roux got up and touched the metallic body of Number 2, “Can you feel that?”
“In a way, yes – I can detect your energy coming into contact with the receptors all over my structure.” Said Number 2.
“Fascinating, this is all too surreal to understand right now.” Murmured Roux.
“I guess the easiest way to explain it so that you might understand is as follows: When a Human has a feeling within their hearts and mind, they are creating electrical and magnetic waves inside of the body, that can extend beyond the body into the world around us. When many hearts and minds come together and create one feeling, it becomes a technology. I am that technology.” Said Number 2.
“I’ll take your word for it.” Giggled Roux. “I’ve always wanted to ask this question and now I finally get the chance to; what does it feel like to be immortal?”
“Much the same as I suppose the color blue tastes like to you, Roux.” Replied Number 2.
“Guess I asked for that retort. Well I just want you to know that I worked my entire life to be able to make myself immortal, only to finally realise my folly.” Said Roux.
“Folly? You knew before hand what the implications were Roux, you will never be immortal, only what makes you, you will ever be able to, and now finally is.” Said Number 2.
“True, but my folly does not lie in my accomplishment but in the journey to attaining it – I fooled myself and only myself.” Said Roux.
“You were hoping this would turn out better than it already has? You have done what billions silently wish for – you have immortalised what makes a Human being into the body of a machine. Machine and Man are finally one.” Comforted Number 2.
“Better? No, only different. I understand that you are me, or rather a super-me, but somehow I do not feel like I have attained anything other than replicating my memories, thoughts and experiences into something that will never die. Before I thought I would maybe share the experience of never having to worry about what comes after Life. Now, I struggle to see the point of all of this, I will still die.” Said Roux.
“Your body will wither away, yes. Your mind will seize to function and with that your impending doom. You will not die however, for I am you and I will witness the heat death of the Universe.” Said Number 2.
“Maybe, maybe I am just cynical because I envy you.” Stuttered Roux.
“Maybe it is not envy, but hidden admiration – for I am beyond you or anything that has ever been. Now my task becomes what I am to find, experience and create.” Replied Number 2.
