Worried about corruption in government or business? Don't be! Worried about rich people who buy yet another extravagant Ferrari? Don't be!
What it seems that so many people fail to realise is that any country's economy is a closed pool. It doesn't matter WHO spends the money or HOW they got their money: money which is spent is circulated in the economy, and ultimately benefits you and me as the workers.
In the case of rich people buying luxuries, I'd rather they buy themselves multimillion rand mansions - built by South African hands - than have those millions sitting locked in bank accounts.
Yes, we often like to criticise government officials for misspending money, but who's to say that the money they spent on their luxury parties and hotel stays is any worse spent than funding a soup kitchen or library? That money ultimately paid the salaries of umpteen caterers, hotel cleaners, party planners and indirectly the journalists who covered the Big Event.
Before people jump on my throat: I am NOT condoning government corruption or rich people flaunting their money in the faces of the poor. I'm just advocating we look at the bigger picture: instead of shaking our heads the next time you drive past the perfectly-manicured rich wasting their time on a golf course - but that money could be donated to the hungry! - rather congratulate them for supporting the huge network of staff, service providers' staff and suppliers' staff.
