Is the recent announcement by President Rouhani of Iran to President Obama that Iran has no ambitions to develop nuclear weapons and President Obama's response regarding that, a genuine sign that both sides are seriously considering diplomacy as a way out of the logjam that sees Iran as the polecat of western ire? I think it is and I hope that both sides are beginning to see sense in the virtue and value of diplomacy.
For those coming into this cold, President Rouhani announced that Iran had no ambitions to develop nuclear weapons which President Obama's gave qualified response acknowledging this to be a positive sign.
I believe that the West, particularly the US should embrace this overture and to test its genuineness by widening the doors of diplomacy and encourage Iran through partial lifting of sanctions imposed against it. So far President Rouhani has shown considerable good will mindful of the fact that Iran is still under the grip of conservative elements and therefore I opine that channels of communication between Teheran and Washington must be explored. Iran, like it or not, is no push over, like Iraq was and it is a major power in the Middle East though I am in no way advocating a policy of appeasement but rather a policy of openness by both sides which would certainly contribute towards efforts to resolve the Syrian impasse that is being debated in the UN. I understand that President Rouhani is going to meet with William Haig of the UK in the sidelines when the UNGA meets soon and I believe this to be a positive sign.
