A horrendous act right under our noses!

A horrendous act right under our noses!

A 36 year old business man from Springs on the East Rand, was yesterday arrested, as a consequence of it being alleged that he held his wife and five children imprisoned in the house and physically and mentally abused them, and even torturing them.

To read something like this in our society is not only horrendous but shocking to say the least. It reminds one of Elisabeth Fritz of Austria that for 24 years was held captive by her father, raped and abused.

This time around it didn’t happen in a country kilometers away from us. It happened right here under our noses.

The man responsible for this horrendous act could have been the person that was standing next to you at the braai last Saturday. It could have been the man, your neighbour that you sometimes meet and chat to at the corner café when you go to buy bread. It can be the colleague within your work, in the office next door to you.

In a country where high crime rates are the order of the day, high walls around residences, and even the use of security bars in front of windows to keep the criminals out is a common sight. This however has the consequence that in most cases we don’t even know our neighbours. In this case the high walls that surrounded the property, held children as captives for many years, living a life of nightmares and unthinkable trauma - away from society that has become less caring. The neighbours in this instance need to be commended for eventually alerting the police in this matter.

The pain, neglect and rejection that these children have been subjected to, hurts one to just imagine it. A household need to be a safe haven for all within it and should be a place of love and unconditional acceptance. The extent of the physical and psychological harm and abuse that these children have been subjected to will be devastating in their future. They now need to receive the best possible care and support.

The many questions about what really happened in this house will unravel in the next couple of days and some questions answered. Many a question will however never be answered.

One question that we do need an answer for as a matter of urgency is how to prevent something like this happening again in our society, as it is imaginable to think that things like this happen right under our noses, where nobody knows anything about it for years on end.
