For quite some time I've been observing the News24 users voting system i.e the thumbs up / down system. In a South African perspective, the amount of thumbs up one gets is not a reflection of the profoundness or thoughfulness of the statement the user submits but is rather more about the provocativeness of the statement relative to the race group they belong.
For example if News24 releases a race-sensitive story whereby the perpetrator is black and the white person posts a comment that denigrates all black people relative to that story, they are bound to receive thousands of thumbs up.
You then get a black person trying to put forward a corrective perspective on the story and they get a thousand thumbs down. This then prompts other people to post populistic messages which might not be their true views or feelings in order to get favourable votes. This seems to be the way this online sharing of ideas and experiences is viewed by most users.
Just my observation !!
