I need to blurt this out to my fellow humans. Life’s status quo, in this country is on the edge of a knife for me – if not already falling to the dark side.
Call me the prophet of doom, call me racist, call me cranky, call me a dud but this is the feeling I have had for years now.
A few months ago we had a motivational speaker address us at work. As it goes, we know the hype… You go on a high for a few days (or weeks) after which, everything returns to “normal”. All well and good – but something stuck with me. I needed to get positive within myself. I needed to see the good in everybody, make peace with the things I cannot change and appreciate my virtues and good health. Problem is; I am the only one. In a sea of negativity I was going to swim totally upstream.
I decided that for my own good, for my own future and life in this country I was going to have to keep my mind positive.
You try this. You try deadening your ears to the endless accounts of crime in our immediate community. You try ignoring the negative news reports about our failing government, MEC’s, Ministers, municipalities, power providers, water purifiers, sewerage works, transport entities, medical care, rising food prices, workforce strikes, youth league rants, etc., etc.
Every living somebody who has a name has something to say. And that is all it is, they say something… Poverty must be alleviated, children must receive better education, the roads must be repaired, healthcare must be free, clean water must be provided, power to the people!
This country cannot go forward with words. Those tipping the top scales of income in government will just haul as much they can out of this “lull” which will last possibly another 3 years. After that, there is nothing. No progress made, no future for successors, just another African country.
We, as previously advantaged, have to teach and guide our previously disadvantaged fellows to the light. This seems to be more of a mission than anyone would have ever foreseen. The culture of the people who are to be taught and guided is that they are simply being too arrogant and greedy about it. Now that they have the power, they will have the pot of gold too. They will not accept accountability or responsibility unless it is for success, and even then they will swing it to make a dime or two.
Progress, future, leadership, responsibility, sincerity, innovation. These are omitted words in the new South African dictionary (Unless in the industry of crime).
If I had the means, I would be long gone. I would write off this country as another disaster in the African continent. Until then, I will close my security gates, switch on the alarm, keep the gun cocked and a close eye on the workers. I will smoke and drink so I don’t have to suffer for too long and advise my kids to move away.
Please, is there somebody out there that can support my less than diminished positive drive?
Can somebody help me on my feet again without saying what a beautiful country we live in. Without pointing to biltong, Castle, sunshine, rugby and all that shit?
