ANC's integrity committee

17 May 2013, 07:17

When an organisation as diverse as the ANC makes the first attempt to establish an integrity committee it leaves one to wonder if it was the dream of some prisoners released from Robben Island [Former exclusive detention centre for political prisoners , Survivors of the famous Rivonia Trial currently a World heritage site]. In the Oxford English dictionary integrity is a mass noun with two definitions. The first definition refers to integrity as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles: a gentleman of complete integrity. The second definition of integrity refers to the state of being whole and undivided: upholding territorial integrity and national sovereignty. The latter definition seems to be the one eye that the established ANC integrity committee wish to see itself and its own members.

There some who would agree that the current ANC and its structures including the ANCYL and others are just parts of an ailing animal or a Skorokoro minibus. The Skorokoro is defined as a Worn and ragged beyond its years, usually used to describe a vehicle , in this case it serves the purpose as some excited members of the ANC would refer to it as” a vehicle of the transformation agenda” .The ailing animal in this case could be compared as a poached Rhino that has been hurt by the same people who are supposed to protect it. This keeps one asking further questions now that the ANC’ integrity committee has been established. The assumption by some that this committee  would serve its purpose of uniting the African National Congress is farfetched.

If  the first definition of integrity was understood and taken seriously by the current leadership of the ANC then they would understand that the moral principles of the African National Congress are not and will unlikely be in the hands of a few in a Democratic society. The establishment of the ANC’ integrity committee is just an attempt to make a few individuals to be the custodians of the Holy Grail of the organisation in which all members are expected to drink from it honesty and moral principles. One wonders who the brewers are?

Since the founding fathers of the ANC excelled in carrying the agenda of transformation and Freedom charter during their time , they haven’t managed to inspire the current role models. Since it was founded in 1912, the ANC started to hit the road as any new vehicle would, but due to wear and tear even the cheapest insurance premium wouldn’t cover its current state from the damages sustained by storms and hail over the recent years. When the sustained efforts of repression by the Apartheid system and its current operating cells, the ANC vehicle managed to drive through and carried the dreams of many in South Africa and around the world. Thanks to the drivers of the minibus including former president Chief AJ Luthuli, former president OR Tambo , former President NR Mandela and president TM Mbeki among others. The unquestionable integrity of the past presidents leaves one to wonder if the currently leadership will recover from multiple concurrent accidents that they sustained.

The Rhino wouldn’t inject itself with a remedy to bring its poached horn back and neither would the Skorokoro run to the garage for V-powered fuels hoping to renew its viability. The Freedom charter as adopted in Kliptown in 1955 start by “We, the people of South Africa ,declare for all our country and the world to know”. The opening line itself doesn’t need one to have an integrity committee to sense the integrity of the Freedom charter[The Freedom charter was the statement of core principles of the African National Congress in 1955 and it hasn’t changed].The people shall govern and determine the African National Congress’s Integrity.
