I drove from JHB to Pretoria the other night. I have not done that in a couple of years, at least not at that time of night. What a pleasant drive! Road was quiet and very well lit. It felt like I was doing window shopping in Menlyn Mall, after hours, wondering where I'm going to spend my money. All the variouse company's logo's was huge and bright. Hell, they sure got my attention. New ones, old ones, small ones and big ones. There must be thousands?
That got me thinking. Why will I soon be charged to have my right of way in this country? Can't the bill be footed by these huge corporations that are getting the advertising benefit of hundreds of thousand cars travelling the highway every day? Afterall, we are your clients or prospective clients. An Auditor can work out how much each company needs to pay per month, depending of it's size/turnover, over the next 10 or 20 years. Or, until the dept is paid. Part of their marketing budget. Once that,s done, I think it only fair that we as travelers can then pitch in regarding the maintenance and upkeep of the highway.
I am sure OUTA has not tackled the E-Toll saga from that angle. Don't even think SANRAL has thought of that.
