As an individual using the roads of Johannesburg extensively on a daily basis, the aggressive nature of individuals using the roads is becoming increasingly alarming. The ways in which a significant number of individuals drive indicates an "everyone for themselves" type of attitude and this is evident in the number of accidents occurring on a daily basis.
Motorists, taxi drivers and the like use the roads in such a selfish manner that, whether aware of it or not, they put every other vehicle around them in danger. It is time that motorists begin to evaluate their actions and reflect on the consequences they could potentially have.
While the dangerous nature of driving, particularly in the city, has always been obvious that it almost seems natural, it is always heightened in the event of a near incident and, of course, in any collision. In my experience this week alone I was almost involved in two collisions due to individuals driving in the yellow lane to turn left as they did not have the patience to wait less than a minute for the robot to turn green and traffic to move swiftly forward. This is an example of unnecessary driving habits that can cause unnecessary injury an damage.
It is important that motorists begin to think about the consequences that can possibly arise from what seems to be a harmless driving habit. Remember that whether in a rush or not, one cannot control the traffic, so take a deep breath and drive safely.
