It was four years ago when I was sitting in an examination room, take note to the rain drops outside and having my Mathematics paper 2 answer sheet and question paper in from of me. I never forget that day out of all my Matric exams I wrote due to the weather of that day and the way I “Chowed” that exam. I will never forget the quietness that flowed around the exam with everyone minding his own business. That also marked the day where I apprehended that in life you’re alone. No one can help you at that time unless you need clarification of the certain question. I procured time to inscribe this piece not because I sought to share my experience hence; I should avoid diverging from the main purpose.
The other time I delivered a talk in my previous school and I started the talk by asking them “how do they want to react when they get their results?”
I want to take this time and talk to the Matric students across this country. This article is dedicated to you.
Throughout my life, I have done lot of tutoring and mentor-ship and in that journey I have learnt why people do acutely in their academics. It is unfortunate that some Limpopo pupils don’t have textbooks even now. I don’t even know how to advice them, it’s hard! Emanating back to those who have the resources, I have to tell you that most people fail or do badly in their exams because they PANIC. People get nervous for or about exams and it is mostly caused by poor preparation and low self esteem. How do you combat such is probably the question that is on everyone mind at this moment?
Well, my first year lecture once gave me a very valuable advice that has abetted me in my University life. You see poor preparation might be due to so many things such as procrastination of which for me is at the top of the list. However, one can overcome it. You see it is very natural to avoid things that are unpleasant, tiring, difficult, or anxiety provoking. Although it is natural and understandable, procrastination is the greatest threat faced by most academics. Procrastination will poison your productivity and maim your chances for tenure. It is the virulent disease that annihilates academic success. Inoculate yourself now. Unfortunately there is no other solution to this disease rather than getting started with your work you have to do… GET STARTED!
The advice I got form my lecture was about when to start preparing for your exams. He said “the moment you see the campus turning green, you should know that it’s time to prepare for your final exams”. Well When I look outside now, the trees are green and I am glad I have started preparing for mine...NO PROCRASTINATION!
How does one alleviate low self-esteem or no confidence in oneself? The lone reason you panic is because you don’t contemplate that you have done plentiful preparation for your exams. Sometimes you did but delinquently, you met a friend prior the exam who will ask you questions such as “have you done that chapter” of which might be inapt for the exam. But you countenance it to dismay you right before your exam, and when it’s exam time you’re panicking. When you panic, you will make a lot of blunders hence; you will do severely! Do your preparation in advance, be confident in yourself and avoid those last minutes advice's, they will cause misperception and led you to fiasco…PREPARE IN ADVANCE AND BE CONFIDENT.
Matric exams are not hard at all so I am hoping that you won’t be aiming for 30% while there is a 70%. The 30% can get you a pass but believe me; it will not get you University entrance. In fact, in University we call it a DP requirement meaning it is just a pre-requisite to write your exams.
Please study smart, those burning the oil tendencies don’t work for everyone. For instance; some people like me might be nocturnal (Active during the night) but not everyone is. Use the time you have during the day and evening to work effectively. I don’t like giving people advice to stay up the whole night. You might not be productive at all. Try to eat Healthy people so that your health conditions might be in good state. You cannot to afford to get sick now. Those of you who has taken drinking Alcohol as a hobby, I won’t judge you but I will advice you to slow down a bit and concentrate on the big picture.
Above all, I wish all of those who are in Matric this to have peace in their mind while their writing and they could study with understanding. I wish you all the best guys for your exams.
