I by chance found Justin Parks's very well written article on this subject and some of those comments were astoundingly... I can't think of another way to put it, downright dumb. It seems to me that some of the comment writers do not know what the definition of the word ignorance is.
ignorance - lack of knowledge, information, or education; the state of being ignorant
To the average modern person, it would be a rather bold statement to make if one said that ignorance was the main thing keeping religion alive, but the truth is ignorance is the ONLY thing that is keeping religion alive. We today live in a world where people make wild supernatural and superstitious claims without the slightest shred of evidence to support their claims. Now and then when someone approaches them with factual scientific evidence that contradicts their claims, that person gets labeled an ignorant fool. Don't you see the irony here?
The most common argument I see a religious person use against evolution is "How did we get our DNA from chimpanzees? And if we came from chimpanzees, then why are they still around today?". I have seen this exact argument being used against Justin Parks. This in itself is an ignorant and utterly ridiculous argument. If you knew biology, then you would know about evolution. If you knew about evolution, then you would know that WE DO NOT COME FROM CHIMPANZEES. If you knew what you were talking about, then you would know that chimpanzees evolved along-side us from a very distant COMMON ANCESTOR.
Religious people have a very bad habit of using bad second-hand information in support of their superstitious claims. Time and time again I see stories surface on social media that is 'proof' of the existence of god, but after doing a little bit of research every last one of those stories turned out to be complete fabricated lies. If you had to point out that their story is a lie and provide evidence that backs up your claim, their response will show you exactly how bad the ignorance in religion really is. It is usually something along the lines of "It is just 'the enemy' pointing you to the wrong path", or "keep your blasphemous remarks to yourself".
Before I go on, please open a new page on your internet browser. Now please go to google search for "definition of ignorance". Keep that definition of ignorance in mind as I go on with this.
Religion teaches people to be satisfied with not knowing how the world and the universe works. Religious people choose by themselves to remain ignorant. They bluntly refuse to find the truth for themselves. They choose to remain ignorant about the facts of evolution, the big bang and all the other REAL answers to the big questions. They bluntly refuse to educate themselves and there is a good reason for this:
It all comes down to what is forced into their minds from the moment they are born. Satan. Religious people, as they are from birth being indoctrinated/brainwashed into their religion, are taught that Satan is the source of all evil. Satan is out to break your faith and lead you astray by using other people to cast doubt into your soul. Everything said that contradicts their religion, every word read on any form of media that contradicts the existence of god, everything that goes against what they have been taught is the work of the devil. This gets hammered into their minds over and over again well into adulthood. Even though Satan doesn't even exist, it is the simple idea of Satan that is keeping them ignorant of how things really works.
What I find most ironic is the fact that christians are largely ignorant when it comes to their own bible. Christians believe that their religion is the source of their morality. They believe that the bible teaches everything you need to know to live a good life and how to be a good person. The problem with this is that they only pay attention to the moral values it teaches that they agree with and completely disregard the moral values that they do not agree with. There are a lot of moral codes in the bible that most of them don't even know about, so before you continue reading, please go get your bible. I want to make sure that you don't think I'm making this stuff up. Please... GO AND GET YOUR BIBLE.
Leviticus 20:13 clearly states that gay people should be executed
Deuteronomy 21:10-14 condones rape
1 Timothy 2:12 states that women are inferior to men
1 Peter 2:18 promotes slavery
Exodus 21:7 states that you can sell your own daughter into slavery
Deuteronomy 21:18-21 permits you to kill your children for back-talk
1 Samuel 15:3 talks about god ordering the killing of children and infants
Deuteronomy 25:11-13 commands you to cut off a woman's hand if she grabs your junk during a bar-fight
Psalm 137:9 is just plain messed up, not even going to talk about it
Exodus 31:14 states that working on the sabbath is punishable by death
I really hope that people do not learn their moral values from the bible. A lot of christians will say "the old testament does not apply to us, only the new testament does". This is incorrect. Matthew 5:18-19, Luke 16:17 and 2 Timothy 3:16 states that the old testament still applies. If you believe that your god is the one true god and is completely infallible and perfect in every way, then you have to obey all his rules. There is no picking and choosing. It is either all of them or none of them.
Coming back to the topic at hand, is god real or not? The answer is no. There is not one single shred of evidence to support that claim, and no, your bible (which was written by man) is not proof of anything. It is not our job to disprove god. The one who makes the claim is the one who has to provide the evidence. It is that simple. If you truly believe that it is our job to prove your god does not exist, then I challenge you to prove that unicorns do not exist.
The point I'm trying to make is simple. Educate yourself. We know the big bang happened. Everything you see around you can come from nothing. It has been proven. The standard model of particle physics and cosmology explains how it happens beautifully. We know evolution is real. That has been proven as well. There are a few things that science doesn't know YET, but the attitude of "we don't know this section yet, therefore magic did it" is counter-productive and it is holding humanity back. You have an internet connection, go look for yourself. It is not our job to educate you, that responsibility is yours.
First research and review what you hear before forming your opinion. Don't comment on and try to refute scientific facts if you don't know what you're talking about. That is all.
