As I am sure all you are aware, Rhino poaching is weighing heavily upon our collective consciousness, also like some of you I have been thinking of way that could resolve the problem. I have come up with many reasonable ideas but I think I may have stumbled upon a long term cure.
Rhino poaching is primarily a high value black market product due to the scarcity of the horn and the difficulty involved with obtaining the horn. It’s the high values, that are the primary drivers of the phenomenon and thus it presents itself as the best target to eradicating the problem.
Rhino horn is made of Keratin which is a protein found in hair and nails, it’s a fairly simple and cheap matter to grow synthetic Rhino horn on an industrial scale and flood the market. Initially you would yield extremely high returns but through persistent supply you would ultimately destroy the trust in the market thereby killing the high values which drive it.
On the provision that you operated in a covert manner (with government legislative protection) you would be able to pull this off fairly simply and yield a decent profit at the same time.
Just an idea, better than waiting for them to pop off every living rhino left in our country.
