And now it’s – NUMSA!!!!

03 July 2014, 05:15

No sooner has the strike in the platinum industry, with its 80 000 strong membership ended after a prolonged 5 months of no work no pay, and our economy is yet again being attached and challenged.

NUMSA with its 330 000 strong membership on the 1st July 2014 embarked on a strike, which raises major concerns!

NUMSA wants to within its representation in the steel and engineering sector; prove that it is at the helm of things within COSATU. The strike affects 10 200 companies, of which Escom at its Medupi and Kusile plants are but one.

But this strike is not about the workers. The strike has a very strong political undertone. AMCU with the recent platinum strike gave the NUM a TKO, and for that reason NUMSA will try to do the same.

NUMSA will flex its muscles, but will not try and deflect away from COSATU. NUMSA will only break away from COSATU when it realizes that it can no longer control COSATU from within.

NUMSA has a resounding effect on COSATU, with more than 330 000 members, and that makes NUMSA its biggest affiliated member. They not only have the influence on union matters, but also on the steel and engineering sector as a whole.

NUMSA will be using this strike to raise awareness, of the need for a worker’s party and to strengthen support for it in that regard.

With so many people/members, this strike will affect our growth rate by at least 0.75% per month, compared to the impact of 0.6% on the economy that the platinum strike had over the first quarter.

And such negative rates on a monthly basis can send us right into one of the worst recessions that we can ever have.

Why I love Cambodia’s capital

There are so many reasons to hate Cambodia’s bite sized capital of Phnom Penh. Open sewers, naked children, piles of burning garbage on every street. Its a dirty, smelly, noisy amalgam. But Phnom Penh grows on you and by the time you leave it will occupy a special place in your heart. Read more...
