When I think of my Country, the 1st word that comes to mind is UNITY. I have always found Unity to be something so magical, whether being part of it or just witnessing it. When people stand United for whatever cause, Joy fills my heart and I find myself smiling instantly. I think we can all say that at one point of our lives, we stood united for something – whether it be standing proud in Unity for the School we attended, the soccer team we supported, unity in Love for those we call Family, or United in the Country we belong.. Being able to say – I BELONG and being proud of who you stand for.
“Joined together politically, for a common purpose, or by common feelings.” UNITED.
I am 22 years of age, always been very proud to call myself a South African, I am so proud to be a part of a Country so full of diversity and so full of Beauty. I know for a fact there is no other place on Earth that could measure up to the Country I call home, no place I would rather be. I remember back when South Africa hosted the World Cup, there was something so amazing about how South Africans stood together, how proud we all were to call ourselves South Africans. Although we were strangers to one another, to the rest of the World – We were a country United.
Sadly, the Diversity that once made me fall in love with this Country is now the same thing keeping us divided. Sadness consumes my entire being where Joy once filled my heart. Honestly, I feel each one of us residing in this country needs to accept blame for all the evil that lurks around every dark corner, all the injustices throughout our beautiful country, and all the children forced to grow up in a country where they are NEVER safe. Why have we sat back for so long and just accepted what is going on in this Country? Why are we afraid to stand in Unity and demand a better future for us all?
Undoubtedly, whenever I hear a news bulletin on the radio, read a newspaper article or read up on the latest news on the internet, I come across an article that makes my heart so sad, it makes me so afraid to live in this place I call Home. Babies and 7 year old girls are being raped by grown men, 14 year old boys are raping young girls, the elderly are being killed. Armed Robberies. Murders. Sexual assaults. Molestation. Rape. Abuse. Why are such sadistic things happening everyday in this country??
Forced to obey the Law that doesn't show us Justice? I refuse.
Are we going to leave the future of this country in the hands of the Police of South Africa? They did after all take an oath to serve and protect us right? No. I cannot believe how often I read about an officer of the law committing a crime and not being punished for it. How can they claim to be OFFICERS OF THE LAW yet permit bribery? Does that mean anyone can commit a crime at the right price?? This is bullshit! Why have we just accepted all this injustice? I DO NOT TRUST ANY MAN DRESSED IN POLICE UNIFORM.
Many people justify not taking action for these things by telling themselves that Ignorance is bliss.. Being ignorant is not bliss, ignorance to what is going on in this country is anything but bliss. It’s pathetic, and beyond that – it is selfish. Remaining ignorant to what is going on right NOW in our beloved country only insures a doomed near future. We have allowed the wrong kinds of people to run this country for too long, people that would rather fund their private lives with unnecessary luxuries whilst children go to bed with empty stomachs and sad hearts.
When will South Africans realise that things will not get better with chance, things will only get better with change!! A better future for us all does not lie with taking a chance on the same people feeding us empty promises. It also will not get better in HOPE things will improve – a better future lies in making the necessary CHANGES this country needs.. STAND UP AND DO SOMETHING SOUTH AFRICA. The change this country needs starts with me, it starts with You and it starts with every South African finally deciding to stand in unity to achieve the life we have been promised all these years. It is time for us as South Africans to take the future of our country back into our hands. WE CANNOT DO THE SAME THING AND EXPECT DIFFERENT RESULTS! For as long as we do nothing, nothing will change.
The South Africans who are spending their days waiting for the man we call our president to put an end to all the pain and suffering are the biggest fools of all. Our president is a disgrace, he puts shame into everything Nelson Mandela built for this country. WAKE UP SOUTH AFRICA!!
I am sick of being lied to by the people who are in power, I am also tired of being reminded what the colour of my skin is – RACISM IS ALIVE ONLY BECAUSE THEY KEEP IT ALIVE. For as long as we allow it, race will ALWAYS be a factor keeping us divided. They strive to make sure we “live in equality” yet they are the same people keeping Apartheid alive 10 years long after it ended. If we continue to let race be an issue we will forever be on different sides, and it will always result in the WRONG people remaining in power of this country. Why do they not remind us that we are all HUMAN, isn't that what is important? Why do South Africans have such a hard time accepting and respecting one another despite physical or religious differences? Can you not see that is what they want? They want to remind us that we are different to keep us fighting. For as long as we keep fighting, the longer we remain divided and until the day we stand together – South Africa will never be a safe place to live. Stop giving the idiots who run this country the power to win every time! STAND UNITED.
I want us to stand together, not as women, not as men, not as black people, nor white or Indian – But as SOUTH AFRICANS that have now decided stop waiting to see better days, but instead are going to stand up in UNITY to make the change we want to see in our beautiful land.
