Everything offends everyone these days, you can’t make a comment about anything or anyone without being called out for being politically incorrect. It’s frustrating and annoying, especially when you know that you speaketh the trutheth. I’ve decided that very few things will offend me, it’s helped lower my stress levels and if I’m honest with myself, my decision has saved many-a-ears. No more ear pomping the poor sod who dares refer to his magic card as a “Black Card” instead of an “African American Express”; live easy my brothers and sisters who say “midget” instead of “little person” fly free my comrades who call me “black” and not “African”. I have evolved. Indeed, my list of things that piss me off has dwindled down to two things: stupid people, and people who say stupid things.
Once upon a time I felt obliged to be offended by someone who declared they were racist. These days, I find that rather refreshing. See, I know where I stand with this person. He/ she does not and will not like me because of the colour of my skin; and that’s fine by me. Just like my distaste for avocado for no other reason except the fact that it’s green; I understand a racist. I also don’t subscribe to the notion that every time I don’t see eye to eye with a white person (or any other race) they are racist. There’s a big difference between a racist and a stupid. A racist will call me the ‘K’ word, tell me they’re racist or make derogatory statements about me or to me based on the colour of my skin. A stupid on the other hand will do things slightly differently. They will make bold requests such as “please talk to Sipho in your language?” What pray tell is my language? I speak four of the eleven official languages, and frequently use one unofficial one (vulgarity). Oh I get it, Sipho’s black, I’m black, and so it makes sense to you my dear stupid that we speak the same language? Stupids will also ask questions such as “how come your culture allows pregnancy before marriage?” Have you ever?! How does a stupid take an opportunity to begin a riveting socio economic debate and turn it into the most ignorant and annoying question ever uttered? How have we let people like this live amongst us? Why were they not flown to a remote island and left there to stupid themselves to death? Most importantly, how are they given an ‘out’ and being labelled as racist? These people are procreating! In 20 years we will be surrounded by spawns of stupids and we’ll only have ourselves to blame. There is nothing enlightened about making statements starting with the words “you people” call a spade a spade for heaven’s sake!
My point is this: before you start labelling someone as racist, take a moment to reflect on why you want to call them that. You’d be surprised at how few racists there actually are, and how many stupids walk among us. Just a thought.
