I'm gob-smacked.
Living in Johannesburg, one gets only too used to taxis stopping where they want, BMW drivers cutting in where they want, and ladies in Pick 'n Pay looking as if their lives depend on pushing their trolleys.
To bring the point closer to home, chatting here on MyNews24 one also gets used to one's fair share of rude, insulting and pointless comments. It comes with the territory, fine.
HOWEVER, what still gets to me is when somebody I actually know says something needlessly bitchy in real life. Every single time, I'm left speechless: it's not that I can't shut them down, but I don't think that retorting will improve their attitude.
Here's a case-in-point:
A co-worker of mine appeared on TV last night. It was her first time, and she wasn't that good, but when I saw her today I complimented her and gave her encouragement for the next time. All fine and good.
Fast forward a few minutes, to me playing a home video in the office of me making a stuffed animal dance to Gangnam Style. It's very good, in a corny 'Omg I can't believe anybody would bother to post that' sort of way. I uploaded it to YouTube and everything.
This girl and a few of my co-workers watched the video, and I got a few polite chuckles. Nice. Then this girl pipes up and says, "You know you didn't do anything special, right?"
*Silence*
Me: "Err, yeah, the stuffed animal was the star of the show."
When I SHOULD have said, "Yeah well, at least I'm not trying to make a career out of it."
But I didn't. And frankly, I don't want to, because that's the sort of thing I've always been brought up to know better than to say in real life.
Am I alone in this? If you're Bitchy and Proud, please share some insights here into why you're this way (whether you're a guy or a girl), because I don't get it.
Frankly, if you have a "I don't give a shit about people's feelings" attitude ... you need some re-adjustment. I'm writing this here instead of telling you to your face, because y'know ... I'm too polite for that.
