Today, another post I'd written was published on News24, and one of the notions raised was the fact that we are most certainly NOT the only form of intelligent life in the universe.
As usual, the religious naysayers retreated to their fall back position: god loves us, and only us, and we're the center of the universe, blah blah blah.
Let's ignore beliefs, for just a moment, and focus on facts.
It's a fact that there are approximately 200 to 400 billion stars in our galaxy alone, and approximately 100 billion galaxies in the universe.
That means that in the known universe, there are approximately 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the universe. That's ten sextillion.
Assuming that each of those stars has some form of solar system like ours, that means that there are roughly 10 sextillion solar systems out there...
What you are saying, when you say that we're the ONLY intelligent (and I use the term loosely) life out there is that NONE of those sextillions of planets out there has any other life on them....
Does that not strike you as a TINY bit arrogant?
Even if you go on the intelligent design thing, are you saying that your god created the ENTIRE universe, with all those stars and planets JUST so that humans would have somewhere to live?
And before any of you ask for proof - wait till it gets dark, then go outside. Try to count the stars, and remind yourself that those stars are suns, like ours, with planets orbiting them.
Feel smaller? Thought so.
