Atheism and Woo Woo

02 June 2014, 14:33
Atheists and Woo Woo
Atheists don't believe in any deities because no proof of their existence exists. Atheist reach this conclusion in different ways. Some conclude this because Science directly contradicts religious teachings, Some reach this conclusion because no matter how hard the searched they cannot find these Gods.
My story is simple I read the Bible from cover to cover, didn't understand what I had read because it was not what they had taught me in church, youth groups and Sunday School. There were a number of things that made no sense so I read it again. At that point in my life I still believed that God's must be real, surely there would not be religion with so many adherents if God did not exists.
I did what any confused bloke would do, I asked the pastors, priests and Rabbi's for answers. No answers made any sense, reading in context was an important answer, My question was how could I be reading it out of context if I had read the whole thing. I read every book I could find on religions from Hinduism (Much Woowoo) Islam (So much rabbinical doctrine, Jesus the prophet and then the child molesting prophet) Kaballah and a pile of other stuff related to blokes in orange robes and even Scientology. Forgive my lack of detail, but this happened years before my marriage and my oldest kid is finishing varsity next year.
I found that this made no sense. The woo woo factor became odder and odder. I found Erich von Danikens Chariots of the Gods and was introduced to the concept of Aliens making us what we were. His proof was very sketcy. Now does this mean I think UFO's are impossible, not at all, but I have yet to see verifiable proof of their existance. If there is no life out there, that is a serious waste of space. I don't hate Aliens, I just have no reason to believe that they exist at this date. (Much like God)
At some point I decided, I don't know, I don't care. If any God's exist they can make the effort and introduce themselves.I don't hate any God's, I don't believe in 1000's of them, starting with Amon Ra and finishing with Zeus. No Science at all entered my conversion to Atheism. It was religion that convinced me that it was all woo woo. Since my conversion to Atheism I learned a little about Science and Maths. I am no genius, suffer from a modicum of common sense and have learned that Scientists also have their biases, failings and outright woo woo.
We have stuff like the new Ice Age of the 70's, Global warming in the 90's and now Climate Change that some consider a Science, They consider it done and dusted, There is no argument that Humans are responsible, Scientists that disagree are not published, get called climate deniers and yet no one bothers to prove them wrong. I have noted that we have not entered an ice age, The oceans have not drowned coastal villages but the temperatures and weather patterns are changing. The problem I believe is that some people would like everything to be unchanging. The only constant we have is change. I am an Atheist and fall firmly in the Climate Denier camp. Humans may have an effect but we are kidding ourselves if we think it's as much as we think.
Other Atheists I know practice Reiki, They sincerely believe that they can direct healing rays with their minds, hands and so on. Some believe that Homeopathy is real medicine. Seriously these people believe that water that has had a minute bit of some herb added to it, and is then watered down a 1000 times will have memory and will heal. I am also Atheist and consider this all woo woo. I kind of like tablets that are not mostly sugar, that contain ingredients that stop my stomach from hurting when my hernia plays up.
Atheists like Deists and other folks have their own fair share of batsnot crazy ideas. Much discussion occurs among real Scientists, Carpenters and other folks about all sorts of stuff, Some Woo woo has many adherents and followers, Some Woo Woo fewer, but just because something is popular doesn't make it real.
