There are a few things you will hear atheists say quite often, stuff like “a lack of belief in god is why I’m an atheist”
What if we do that? What if we use their logic and reason against them will they concede and accept the fact that gods or a god can exist?
Let’s have some fun shall we!
First we need to determine what atheism actually means. Let’s have a look;
There really are only two types of atheists; weak atheism (a particular god does not exist) and strong atheism (no gods exist). The majority of the commentators here on news 24 that declare themselves atheists, seem to be strong atheists. To be a strong atheist means that no gods exist and it also means that everything is the result of material processes only. All good so far but for materialism to be true the immaterial cannot exist.
Immaterial things are stuff not made of (atoms) truth, reason, logic, beliefs and freedom are examples of immaterial things.
So with that in mind let’s look at the following; Atheists are quick to voice their opinions on the lack of gods, but what is an opinion? An opinion is conclusion based on a belief system. What is an atheist’s belief system? Do they even have one? Often you will hear an atheist say that they have no evidence that gods exist and thus use a belief system in materialism as the basis to form that opinion. In philosophy this is called an intentional state.
Because atheists have a lack of belief in gods they are forced to believe that materialism is the only system capable of everything that exists; this opinion is what is known as an intentional state. I have to add; atheists have many other intentional states; they believe that free will does not exist because the universe is deterministic, and they also believe that intentional states cannot exist in a deterministic universe .
Did you spot that? They just contradicted themselves, how you ask? Firstly beliefs are immaterial but atheists do not believe in the immaterial! They have just also reached an intentional state by forming an opinion based on the belief system that the universe is a result of material processes. As you can see it has nothing to do with their intelligence that they are atheists only a problem with their formal reasoning and logic.
Now what? Since intentional states do exist as the atheist’s own belief system has shown it means, then the universe cannot be deterministic. If the universe is not deterministic then free will exist and by proving immaterial things do exist (atheistic beliefs) our atheist friends are in a pickle. Will they disregard all their beliefs because of its proven contradictions?
My prediction is they will keep raising their opinions and will wilfully violate their own belief system. I hope they can prove me wrong but I very much doubt that.
