I knew Bafana Bafana was set for failure when our under-performing president was tasked to motivate them. In his speech to the ailing team he said, they should ignore the critics because most of the critics have never touched a soccer ball in their lives. I was not surprised at words like these from a man like him; any high performer will know there is wisdom in making time to listen to any critique directed at you, objectively.
I would love to meet the brains behind assigning Zuma to stimulate the national squad. It was a poor case of assigning a frog to go and speak to gill less fishes before they endeavour an important swimming tournament. He condoned, endorsed and sympathised with mediocre performance, but how could he not, when he is a below average president himself.
We judge others by the standards we set for ourselves, so a person with low standards will never ask of high standards from others. Bafana Bafana is a true reflection of the current culture in South Africa, a culture of poor performance, excuses, lack of commitment and rewarding poor performance.
Our president has been consistent in his poor performance and what did they ANC members do, they rewarded him with an endorsement to take the second term. The ANC as a party has been disappointing in its vision and actions but South Africans are still going to endorse them and vote for them come 2014.
South Africans are going to choose them despite corruption and poor governance that has marred this era. Bafana Bafana has consistently disappointed the nation but no one has ever thought that maybe its ok for a country not to have a national soccer team, instead we have changed coaches faster than Kim Kardashian changes men, and expected different results. Einstein says insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The question is : are we as a people insane?
