It may just be me, but was anyone else struck by the massive irony of Barney Pityana’s letter to Zoomer not getting delivered? What am I on about? See more here.
How sad/laughable/downright pathetic is this? For starters, does the Prez’s office know that there is a strike happening at the Post Office presently? I know and I’m nobody. So how can the office of the leader of the country not know what is going on in a state-funded enterprise? Actually, strike that. Re-reading my last sentence suddenly makes it clear that this is precisely what does happen in the office of the leader of the county. If SAA is anything to go by. Or that other state-funded enterprise called Nkandla. No one related to the Prez seems to know what’s going on there either. So it makes sense then.
Is that the way it is supposed to be, though? Isn’t it the job of the President to be aware of what is going on in the country he so fearless leads? Of course on cannot expect this vaunted individual to be congnisant of the fact that I had no water to my house most of last week, but is it too much to ask for him to be aware that there is virtually no postal service running in the country at the moment? Or is it rather true that he is aware but the regular state of postal delivery is so hopelessly inefficient that this strike really made no impact whatsoever on the speed with which requests to resign reach their intended recipients? I guess that’s possible. So maybe then I am already fired. Then again, my employer has gotten onto this new thing. It’s called a telephone. You use it to talk to people who are far away from you, in like, real-time. Oh and also this other thing they call a fax. It sends pieces of paper over a long distance without ever actually moving the paper. Weird huh? And the newest thing they got is this thing called email? Did I get that right “e mail”? Anyway, this thing allows you to send a letter on a computer. And the other guy gets it like, immediately! Freaky shit…
Be that as it may, it did amuse me to read that the purple dinosaur reckons South Africans deserved better than they were getting. I don’t understand that statement. Aren’t South Africans getting exactly what they deserve? Granted, I’m no political analyst, but isn’t that what democracy is all about? Vote for the guy that’s going to do the things you want to happen/don’t vote for the guy that tales your tax money to buy his security detail two Astroturf pitches to play soccer on between bouts of ramming other drivers off the road because he’s late for a luncheon and damn it if he’s not going to get to the canapés first. If I’m right, then really, Barney’s letter may as well stay lost in the mail because why would Zoomer resign just because the country is edging ever closer to Banana-ville? That’s what we want, right?
Isn’t that what we all want?
