A lot of contentious issues have arisen from the recent Zimbabwean elections and as such the opinions of a multitude of people have come to light surrounding the issue of Homosexuality.
It seems as though the stigmatism stems from an uneducated, religious or an ignorant view of why some men and women are attracted to members of the same sex. Homosexuality is by definition an attraction, sexual or otherwise, to members of the opposite sex and as such a personal preference that one may have when regarding their own sexuality. Contrary to popular belief, which I will assume is propagated by religious views; homosexuality is by no way a choice. A person cannot choose why it is that their mind and body find certain aspects of another attractive. I personally find humour coupled with dark hair and natural looks appealing and can no more tell you why this is than explain the origins of our species. So to some men and women the same applies but in the opposite direction.
The basic human right of freedom of choice and speech ties into the freedom to choose who we love and here I find that even in today’s modern age these rights are being discriminated against by those with either some kind of agenda or those following religious dogma. Just take the case of the Zimbabwean elections where Mugabe (Ironically, in my eyes) harped on about peoples freedoms and in the same pattern of thought went on to chastise homosexuals. In a country where a proposed majority are against it I would say it was just politicking to garner votes. But why are the majority against it? Well according to opinions expressed here on news 24; it all boils down to religious views. Christianity’s Bible refers to it in a few books but one verse in the book of Leviticus stands out the most. "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." (Leviticus 20:13) A popular verse spouted by the so called righteous as proof that God hates gays. However in the same Bible (and in some cases the very same book) we see a multitude of controversial passages that refer to the “proper” treatment of women and on the endorsement of slavery. To quote a few "Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up." (Hosea 13:16) Wonderful moral book isn’t it? This verse is one of many that, due to saving time, I will limit to one. However, what about slavery? Well it says in Leviticus that although you may not enslave god’s chosen people it’s okay to enslave the gentiles.
So with this said I guess it’s okay for me to go and buy some slaves from anywhere as long they’re not Jewish because if Mugabe endorses scripture to pound gays then by that right I can buy Zimbabweans as slaves. Kind of a twisted circular logic isn’t it? This really stems from the religious practice of picking and choosing from the Bible to suit yourself, and yes, I’m aiming this article mainly at the thousands of black readers who would find slavery just as offensive as I find gay bashing. Life goes both ways. Equality goes both ways.
I will stand in defence of a person’s right of sexual preference because I believe that it is an entirely personal topic that no government nor mob mentality should have the authority to decide upon. Your right to religious freedom or whatever misinformed and often vitriolic opinions you may have should not infringe on the rights of others. Period.
