Being certain and a little knowledge

10 July 2014, 09:09
So here's the thing, I am old enough to not need to know everything. One thing I did learn many years ago is that some people are real rockit signtists and others are rocket scientists. You cannot argue with rockit signtists because their minds are made up and they are certain, Some of them are blowhard know it alls and will argue for the sake of arguing. There is a god they will proclaim over and over, like it's proof, The Anglia had a double overhead cam, not a Kent motor they will shout, It never snows in Johannesburg they will espouse even if you show them that they are wrong, they will continue to argue. Personally my claim to fame is that I know a lot about some things, a little about others and absolutely nothing about more stuff than you can shake a stick at.
My attitude has always been that one day as a 90 year old bloke I will learn something new from a 5 year old kid. (That is if I survive that long, statistically it's not likely, the majority of my forbears kicked the bucket before 76). What I know a lot about is stuff that interests me. I read a lot and continue learning daily from experiences and from observation. Stuff I know a little about I may have read about in passing, may have glanced at some literature or got told by someone who knows or seems to know his stuff. Stuff I know nothing about is probably because when I glanced at the literature I started yawning.
I absolutely know nothing about the afterlife, I don't know whether it exists and here is the thing, if you are alive you don't either. Until you are dead, being dead is just something that has happened to others. I know from observation and from prior knowledge that dead is dead. If you drop a corpse it doesn't care, It doesn't say ouch or hey treat me with respect. It is cold and lifeless. I have been dead twice and brought back to life. I drowned twice in my youth and was apparently pretty lifeless when hauled up from the depths of the pools. (I should be terrified of water) On both occasions, it was dark, there was no bright light, no fairies, no people to welcome me home. These events happened early in my life and my folks were not Bible thumpers so I had no expectations, so nothing happened, no hallucinations, nothing at all.
I have read about people that have seen their parents, their dogs and other manifestations before being returned from the abyss. I think most people are afraid of being nothing. Not being remembered is a fear held by many. Here is the thing. My Grandad died in 1981. I still have memories of the old man, He was a mensch, a real hero to his family, but I am of the last generation to have known him. Within the next 50 years or so, probably less, he will not be remembered, He will be just a name on a stone in the boneyard, like many others. There are others that will suffer the same fate.
Rarely is there a person remembered for more than 3 generations with love and affection, The few that will be remembered for an eternity are never remembered with fondness, They are just a name in a book or a story. Your life is like footsteps on the waterline, The waves will wash it away and nothing will remain ever.
Anyone that claims knowledge of the afterlife is lying to you. This lie has been told for as long as man has needed a method of placating his fear of death. No proof whatsoever exists, No knowledge exists of the afterlife. If you haven't been there you cannot claim any knowledge.
Let's talk about God. Not one person on this earth has had an actual meeting with this deity or any other. People claim to talk to God, In fact recently I had a couple of dreams where I met God on a dirt road. I don't have any explanation for that, as much as I don't have any explanation for the dreams where I was sailing the oceans, where I was having raunchy group whoopie with a bevy of blonde beauties that would melt your eye sockets, never mind your eyes. People dream, It is scientific knowledge. It is in my understanding one of the factors of having a subconscious mind.
There exists no proof for the existence of any Deities, not one exists unless you use the holy book dedicated to that being as proof. This would be the same argument to prove that Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella exist. I often get told to prove that there is no God. Nobody has seen God, No proof for his existence is available, thus I can make an assumption that he does not exist.
Take a moment and consider the life and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Romans kept meticulous record of prisoners, those that were crucified, those that were fed to the lions, those that were slain by gladiatorial contest. There was no Jesus Christ crucified according to those records. Scholars searched high and low for that proof and could not find it. If the Romans had no record of it, it did not happen.
In Matthews 10:23 Jesus says to his disciples: "When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes."
He did not say that they would be converted, he said they would persecute them, and they should move on. If there is a town in Israel that has not heard of the "son of man" this prophecy is true, I don't believe there is a village in the world that has not seen a missionary at least once, remember the crux was not conversion, but being told about the son of man.
In Matthew 16:28 Jesus says to a crown of listeners : "Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
His words were understood to mean that he would return in the lifetime of those he was talking to. If there are any 2000 year old people this prophecy could still be true.
None of the above is proof that God and Jesus did not exist, They are snippets of evidence that would lead a court to say, There is no proof of their existence. In a court evidence is never led that says that someone was not at the place the crime was committed. There can be no evidence that they were not there, There can only be evidence that they were elsewhere.
If a bank is robbed and the suspect is questioned, an alibi would not be: "I was not in the bank". That would not be proof af anything especially if one of the other patrons claimed to have seen him there. His alibi would be "I was in court room in Benoni at the time, Here is the docket number, My attorney saw me, The magistrate saw me" or "I was having coffee with Billy Connoly at Mugg and Bean, The waitress was that blonde chick"
Proving a negative is always impossible, unless you can prove an alternative. In a court it is incumbent on the prosecutor to prove that the suspect was in the bank, The suspect only has to offer a viable and provable alternative to disprove the accusation.
So when you tell me that God is watching me, you need to offer evidence that this is true, If I don't believe you I don't have to offer proof, merely an alternative. The alternative I offer is that without any proof of your assertion, I cannot in good conscience say what you are proffering is the truth. If that prosecutor claimed that the suspect was in the bank, had no eye witnesses, no footage or any proof, the magistrate would have no choice but to free the suspect even if he was guilty.
