Away from sunny SA

01 December 2010, 07:07  - Piemaker
It is December and it is snowing. On Saturday night a few of us got together to watch the Springboks take on England.

It was bitterly cold and dark early outside and we were thinking how family and friends were standing by fires in the garden and having a traditional braai way back home. Nostalgia set in.

Someone said: It is like eating cake and not tasting it. Yep. That’s life away from South Africa. Eating cake and not tasting it. Every day.

Life in Scotland is not easy, but it is safer. Sunshine is in very short supply, but we can enjoy the outdoors without fear.

It sometimes doesn’t stop raining, but we don’t have to be concerned our drinking water is being poisoned.

Shopping malls are few, but none are overcrowded by hijackers and robbers. Children don’t have endless chances of outdoor life and fun, but they can do it without guards.

Politicians are misbehaving, but not destroying their own country and exploiting it.

Rape of women happens, but still makes the front page as it is not just another common crime.

Police sometimes turn a blind eye, but don’t participate large scale in the destruction of discipline and rule of law.

I am very happy, simply very happy. I have discovered normal life. Let Africa swallow another of its crown jewels. Good bye South Africa. Forever.
