Best of both worlds

02 December 2010, 11:00  - Onefoot in London
I moved to London in 2005 at the age of 25 for the reason of getting my British passport as a plan B should anything happen to SA such as it did in Zimbabwe.

I come from a privileged background being born and raised in Sandton and schooled in Durban, I had the café culture and beach vibe all at once during my youth.

Next year, I will get my citizenship and become British passport holder as per the plan.

However, I will not be returning to SA after that. I now have my own business and English girlfriend both of which make it very difficult to return.

Life in London is simply awesome; if I need my South African fix, I can simply head down to a South African area like Wimbledon for an unlimited supply of South African shops and atmosphere.

Garden cricket and braai’s still happen in London during the Summer months. The days are long and the music festivals are weekend after weekend. I travel to beautiful beaches in Europe that put camps bay to shame.

The UK is in the centre of the world with easy access to anywhere, we share the same interests in cricket and rugby so it isn’t a culture clash. Best of all London is only 11 hours from home in virtually the same time zone.

I come back home twice a year, it’s cheap and quick. I’ve enjoyed the European summer and now I can enjoy the African summer too.

In December I’ll be back again spending New Year’s Eve with my mates and the holidays on the coast like all the other vaalies. When I come home we hit the Pilansberg, Balito and Jozi.

I love SA but prefer to operate in the English system. I would never move to Australia, it’s too far away and expensive to do anything.

Why not have the best of both worlds? Come to the UK, sure it’s cold but who really cares when you are so close to home. Enjoy the world.
