Cosy in Canada

29 December 2010, 10:30  - Daniel Walktall Lawrence
I'm a South African living and working in Saskatchewan, Canada. I've been here for four and half years without any incident of mocking me for my looks or even my background.

The white folks are very nice and friendly compared to my fellow white South Africans.

My daughter being the first black girl in high school was welcomed with open arms. No racial slurs at all.

At work, the way I get treated is amazing compared to the way I used to be treated by my fellow South Africans white and black. Here (Canada) they still value human beings no matter your looks, gender or beliefs.

At work, I sometimes even forget that I'm black - only when i look at myself in the mirror do I see I'm still black.

My employer encourages me to study further, and what I like is that in Canada it is your family first then your job.

I'm living in a city of more than 7 000 people with no burglaries, rape crime or even yelling at each other. Truly peaceful. I work in a city of almost 1 00 000 people with no burglar bars in the doors or windows.

I've been driving for four years without being stopped once by a cop. I got my licence in the first three months - not like back home where you're forced to even to beg for it. At age 16, my child got her driver’s licence without failing.

I must tell you, life is really worth living here. I don't lock my house or cars. Here it still like the old South Africa, where you can let your neighbours know that you're expecting visitors and to let them in while you are gone. The real ubuntu.

We as South Africans need to learn a lot from other countries as well.

I like SA and always will.
