The SA expat stigma

09 December 2010, 13:05  - Ryan Prout
I decided to send this mail after coming across a front page link on your website.

I currently live in England. I am a 26-year-old white male and to go on a news site to see how my home is doing and finding this article of stigma, really saddens me.

I did not leave for any reason other than to chase a girl across the world, if she didn't leave, I would still HAPPILY be in South Africa.

The funny thing is, the stigmatism of White South Africans abroad, is that they are the biggest racists in the world today. How nice? Australians get "throw another shrimp on the barbi", British get "Oh shall we have some tea and crumpets" and we get 'oh so you hate black people?"

What a nice image we've projected to the world, that I actually have to sit there and explain that I am in fact not a racist is a crime all in itself.

People my age missed apartheid but have grown up with the burden of fixing the mess our parents made, I've watched proudly as our country has moved forward and the people within it have stood together, older white people have this guilt that they have never stood up to, so sit moaning and coming up with excuses on how "black people" are harming the country.

Some people in power have taken advantage of the system but please show me a country where this hasn't or doesn't happen?

More people are able to get an education than ever, South African didn't feel the full force of the world recession because our finance ministers predicted it and kept our head above water.

People who say, "My children won't be able to get a job because of black empowerment". Well, if your children aren't lazy, they'll be just fine. Or maybe they should get a waiter job to pay for themselves while they look for the job they want?

Not everyone can have that rich job like mommy and daddy walked into, it's equal now. There's a lot of jobs out there but there's also a lot of educated people to fill those jobs, you have got to bring your A game. BEE will go in the next few years, give people a chance to catch up.

Racism stops when you stop talking about it, don't make it a thing and it won't be.

Older people, please stop moaning, you left this for us to fix and we are fixing it.
