Why I left

28 December 2010, 10:31  - Ronja Isaacs
Hi, my name is Ronja Isaacs and I have recently become an expatriate in Angola.

I find all this to be complete and utter nonsense. My reasons for leaving were quite simply for the money and job security.

After working for a big South African company and then being retrenched it saddens me that there is a greater stigma from our own people. I am fortunate to be 26 years old therefore never needing to have dealt with apartheid.

What devastates me is when meeting new persons they always ask if “OUR country has improved”. I personally do not think we have a bad country and it has afforded me a wonderful education that has allowed me to pursue what I now accomplish.

It is believed that once one returns from working abroad you have pots full of money; that is not the case but SA wins this battle as I only ever spend my money in SA. The issue here is simply that we do not have enough jobs to go around and due to the cost of living internationally and nationally what we earn will never be enough.

To all South Africans working abroad, I am proud of you. You have made a conscious decision to do what is best for your families. We do not do what we want to do but rather what we have to do, and being away from our love ones is never an easy decision.

To all those who dislike the idea of foreigners working in our country remember that there are just as many South African’s working abroad and what happens to foreigners in SA can happen to those of us outside of SA.

I am in complete agreement with Ryan Prout:
People who say, "My children won't be able to get a job because of black empowerment". Well, if your children aren't lazy, they'll be just fine. Or maybe they should get a waiter job to pay for themselves while they look for the job they want?

Angola has been good to me and I know many persons who have reaped the benefits of our current situations. We all have to make choices and we all need to work hard. The idea that this is easy is never substantiated and daily I miss home. It is the only country where a barbeque is referred to as a braai. And the only place where I will ever truly feel home.

I hope that we can change our outlook and allow persons from other countries to see what a great country we have. All countries face the same difficulties, ours however has achieved more than any other.
