Why not travel by choice?

18 November 2010, 15:00  - Jan
Dear Editor,

I am from Dutch descent. How far back bloodline in South Africa goes, I do not know. My ancestors could have been deckhands on the Jan Van Riebeeck flotilla that landed in Cape Town in 1652 for all I know. The point I am trying to make is I am South African.

I have lived in Stilfontein, Klerksdorp, Pietersburg, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Worcester, East London and Port Elizabeth.  Due to business and pleasure I have been to Cape Agulhas in the South, Musina in the North, Hluhluwe in the East and Alexander Bay on the West.

These and a magnitude of places in between.

I’ve been to Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique. Travelled in the UK, Europe, South America and Thailand.

I now live in the USA.

All my travels have been by choice. I find it quite displeasing that people comment that you are a traitor when you leave South Africa. Some would even like to give their permission first for people to re-enter South Africa.

One can leave and return to South Africa as many times as you like.

Then there are those that keep on bragging about our wonderful country and pap and wors. A beautiful country, by all means yes. However why not experience some other country and some other food? Add to your life experience, do not limit yourselves. Why go up Table Mountain 10 times when twice will do and then throw in some other mountains somewhere else in the world.

It is wonderful to read peoples adventures somewhere else in the world. It makes you want to experience it. The choice is not South Africa or another country. The choice should be South Africa AND other countries.

Jan, USA
