One thing that has become patently obvious in the last few days, is that Oscar Pistorius should be banned from ever owning, using, or even handling any kind of weapon whatsoever, irrespective of whether he is found guilty or not.

It’s not only that his mental ability to do so seems completely lacking, - having discharged a friend’s handgun in a restaurant, for example – or that he purportedly sleeps with a loaded 9mm Parabellum under his pillow – dangerous in anyone’s book;  but he is a callous individual, who in a recent video that I saw, was hugely blasé about shooting people, comparing watermelon targets to brain matter, and the way that they reacted, when being hit by shotgun fire.

Not that he has any leg to stand on when it comes to acting like Rambo.  These days, in spite of stringent gun laws and rigid licensing requirements,  one merely needs to go through the motions, and you’ll probably get the required permissions.  You can even pay people (who don’t know you or your circumstance) to compile a motivation for you  – and in this, Oscar is very run-of-the-mill.  So you have been given a license and a gun.  Point-and-shoot, sunshine…you don’t need to make out like you’re a recce.  Any idiot can do it.

Not to mention that he killed a lovely and wonderfully intelligent and gifted person, by all accounts.  I can’t see that he’ll get past the fact that he shot her through a locked door.  In terms of the law, you are responsible for the eventual effect of the shot or bullet that you have fired – unintentional or not.

Add to that that your, or the life of someone that you wish to protect, should be in immediate danger before you are allowed to shoot to protect yourselves, and the plot thickens, just like Oscar, to the point that he really ought to be hanged for what he’s done to Reeva, her family, and the country in general.

You were granted that gun license in the same way that any other ordinary citizen is granted one, Pistorius.  You applied under the same conditions that all of us are subjected to.  In this, your disability counts for nothing - whether you’re lying about mistaking her for a burglar, or not.
