In a twist of genius (he thinks), or (more likely) an idea from a particularly addled part of his incredibly aged brain, Bob the Unbuilder to the north of us has decided that there should be one supreme President of Africa. No prizes for guessing who he wishes to nominate to lead said ‘United Africa’. Hmm – didn’t the late Gaddafi propose the very same thing a while back? Look what happened to him in the end …. Oooh now there’s a thought… but I digress.
Incredulous head-shaking over the suggestion aside, how would it ever be possible, given the intensity of xenophobia and plain old envy surrounding those in power as opposed to those who want it, could there ever be unity? Really? Not simply the accusations of makwerekwere, generally denoted as being ‘foreigners, those who smell bad, are too black’ and various other distinctly uncomplimentary terms, but more generally the feeling of being ‘other’, whether through different cultures or different religious beliefs, makes the mere suggestion of unity completely laughable.
Until such time as we can all, yes all, of whatever colour, ethnicity, religious belief, sexual orientation, male or female, honestly state that the policy of Africa should be one of unity, tolerance and respect, then sorry for you Uncle Bob, it ain't going to happen, so – dream on.
