Breeding disrespect

20 June 2014, 14:25
Our parliament is the Highest Institution from where our elected representatives (MP's) pledge the oath to serve our country with dignity, honesty and respect. To strengthen our democracy by promoting respect for human dignity, equality and freedom.
The President's State of the Nation Address is the occassion to express the commitment to serve our country's wellbeing.
We do extremely well in inviting people from all walks of life to this important occassion. Especially our Youth. Children in school uniforms excitedly line the streets leading up to parliament, to get close to the people who they look up to. The people they respect. The people they expect to govern our country for a better life, a better future.
Then, as the President enters parliament, and the house rises in respect, our children see DA and EFF members remaining seated. Disrespect for the dignity of parliament. Nothing to do about your feelings for the President.
When the debate on the SONA resumes the next day, we and our Youth are exposed to the most disappointing and disgusting display of disrespect, in the Highest Institution of our Democracy. Personal attacks, name-calling, political posturing, everything but debate about the wellbeing of our country. If anything, this display of gross disrespect in parliament is a truer reflection of the state of our nation.
And we wonder why there is so much moral degeneration in our country.
We accuse our Youth of disrespect, and of much more that is going wrong in our country.
Yet we refuse to see the bad example that we are setting for our children.
Moral Regeneration in our Country will only happen when our elected representatives model the way that seeks to serve our Country with dignity, honesty and respect.
Parliament is the perfect place from which to model the way.
