I have said over and over again that the only way out of this mess is together; yet the terms of engagement at the moment assume that the moral high ground belongs to the pure, unadulterated black victim laying material and symbolic claim and control over the impure, adulterated white perpetrator.” – Jonathan Jansen
Never before have I come across a passage that describes the solution and the difficulties facing a true rainbow nation so succinctly as the one above. Professor Jonathan Jansen is a true patriot, a man that as I South African I look up to and respect. The man’s intelligence and education is only surpassed by his ability to objectively view the South African socioeconomic climate.
The ANC elective conference is mere months away and it seems likely to come down to a Jacob Zuma re-election or Kgalema Motlanthe in Mangaung in December. Looking at the choices who are likely to be South Africa’s next president gives me a grave sense of sadness. Why is it that instead of choosing from the best and the brightest for our country’s leaders we choose from candidates who are best able to play on the fears of the voting population?
This is a sentiment that has been echoed by many, what a pleasure it would be if we could have a president as respected, educated and eloquent as Professor Jonathan Jasen?
