Many of us are quick to complain and there’s nothing wrong with that at all. We need to highlight the bad, as we will never improve unless we can accept and recognize that which is bad and make a conscious decision to improve it.
Not enough of us however, flip the coin and offer praise where it is due.
So here then is some kudos for the City of Cape Town.
Not only is Cape Town a magnificently beautiful city with Table Mountain standing proudly front and centre as the raison d'etre for the city and all it’s inhabitants… Not only are those inhabitants a wonderfully varied collection of representing all the colours of our Rainbow Nation… Not only are our beaches spectacular… Not only do we host a Super Rugby semi-final…
But our city WORKS…!
Yes, I know we have slipped in our, just released, annual audit and hopefully our Council, Mayor and City Management will take this to heart and sort this out for next year… but yesterday driving through my suburb I saw:
A team fixing potholes in one of the more well used roads;
The installation of new traffic lights (not quite complete yet) at a particularly awkward intersection; and
Also that the trees on our pavements had been neatly trimmed of lower branches opening up the avenues not only making it easier to see but also making it safer from lurking figures!
We read about the lack of maintenance in other cities and areas of South Africa and potholes about which the only forewarning are the protruding ears of the rabbits trapped in them… only to discover when you reach the pothole that the ears in fact belong to donkeys…
So it is more than a little satisfying to know that my rates are not paid into some shapeless ill-defined bottomless pit of non-accountability and are indeed used to maintain the area in which I live and pay those rates.
So, well done to the City of Cape Town and all those who work for it in the various departments.
You give us another reason to be proud of living in Cape Town!
Well done and keep up the good work!
