CARNARVON: ANOTHER SIDE
This article is not indented to “have a go” at the general populace of Carnarvon. I read the article posted by NEWS 24 this morning and had one of those huge belly laughs. “SKA breathes life into Carnarvon.”
Earlier this year while preparing to visit Port Nolloth I reserved a room at a lodge which was advertised on the internet. The price, for a change, was reasonable. The idea was to stay over at Carnarvon, rest then complete the final leg of the tour.
The route I would take was from Welkom to Kimberley and from there direct to Port Nolloth via Upington. After staying for 8 days in Port Nolloth We would travel to Cape town via the N7. The N7 runs directly to Cape Town. And is in relatively good condition. All went well and according to plan.
We left Cape Town at 05h00 and maintained a good speed but never exceeding the limit. It being a Sunday morning. Much of the time the road traffic was light. We passed through Nieuwoudtville, Calvinia and Williston. Eventually we reached Carnarvon during the late afternoon. We asked the locals for direction s to a particular lodge but was met with answers indicating they did not know it even existed. We drove up and around the place but still no lodge. Eventually we saw a notice board at the entrance of the town displaying the telephone number of the lodge. It was a Telkom number. After several calls to the number no reply. By now I was exhausted and very gatvol indeed. We drove onto Prieska and made our way to Douglas where we were almost swept away by a cloud burst that night..And so we made our way back to Welkom and it felt just like that.
The point here is we took the advice of the personal at the lodge at face value and trusted them. While the reservations were being made we were asked to pay the fees into a bank account, giving us the number too. A bell should have started to ring but I may have been slightly deaf. Fortunately we did not go that way or we would have lost the money.
