The media, in its poseur role of representing the inquiry of the public, is a bullshitter at the least and a bloody liar more often. But there is a solution, and SA is progressive enough to try it: Censorship.
This is just a quick and hastily written rant to voice my support for the lingering assassination of the freedom of information act, which will castrate and defang the white-puppet media in South Africa, and then perhaps the process of reconciliation and forgiveness can finally begin without the intervention of society’s biased umpires.
The media with their lethargic, sensationalist fuck the facts let’s focus on the controversy modus operandi have collectively convinced me that these headline-spewing propaganda houses should be censored with extreme prejudice. Even better would be if they were pitchforked and barn-lanterned out of existence.
The press should be retitled ‘the oppressor.’ Even more insulting to the intellect is that they always have these shameless names and slogans, ‘The Independent’, ‘Free and Fair News’, ‘The Freedom Press’, ‘Unbiased Voice’, etc. Now that is raw, unsalted irony!
If you want to know what drives public opinion, what inflames the fruitful relations that could exist between different people, and what skews the political voice of an entire nation … just look for your nearest ‘The Independent!’
I have no respect for the media, and I have no respect for the profession known as journalism, anymore. I have no respect for the dramatized news we are force-fed on a daily basis. Free, fair, unbiased, well-researched, credible, presentable, and honest news is the stuff of legend nowadays. If only we could get so much as an honest lie, it would be a step up in credibility for the international media.
The media’s role in first world countries is merely to pacify and blindfold the public. In third world countries, the media has one of two roles: that of the supporter or the dissenter. Either way, you know that they are biased long before paper meets press, and for all the information, speculation, hearsay, and fabrication you will get, you will never get the real story.
Every piece of ‘exemplary’ journalistic work I’ve come across has given me the impression that it was not (as is so frequently assumed) written for idiots, but written by idiots!
The media is responsible for the collective dumbing down of public opinion. The media is the thing that draws the fault lines in society and then quakes the ground to break the whole mass up. Currently, nobody is better off for reading the papers or watching the news; at best, they are forced to assume one of two opposing views.
The third view is non-existent in the modern world. Everything is believer / nonbeliever, liberal / conservative, innocent / guilty, terrorist / liberator, whore / prude. No high-profile news story has any shade of grey or spectrum of colour to it anymore. Everything news story is rendered in black and white, like a Charlie Chapman movie, and it is just as much of a joke.
If you are a journalist and you are reading this, then I sincerely hope that you commit suicide. But before you do that, do what you do so well and marshal the media to drive your colleagues into an assisted suicide, as well.
The media has become its own marketers, shills, and lawyers. These are people willing to lie and exaggerate and are frequently caught in the act of doing so.
The few journalists who still have integrity and present stories in an unbiased way are quickly ejected by the system. Major media outlets refuse to give their imprimatur to anyone who is not a shill. It’s like the media has been taken over by a sinister, off-world force, which conjures up scenes from the movie The Mind Snatchers.
So, if you ask me if I support the censoring of the media, then my answer is absolutely, unequivocally, YES! Freedom of speech is only even abused by these corporate and governmental PR houses. Democracy, too, is only ever abused. The less we have of either ‘right,’ the better off society seems to be because there is no more freedom from responsibility, and no more safety in numbers, either.
