Christianity on the ground

27 June 2013, 12:36

CHRISTIANITY ON THE GROUND

The problem with religion in fact, is its flexibility.

This flexibility has, over 2000 years, opened the door to any interpretation imaginable, by anyone.

We can read and listen to interpretations from people of every walk in life, every mentality, every intention.    Added to the interpretations of those ministering god’s word, we in turn also have the filtered interpretations of the followers and believers.

So I suppose it should be no surprise if one is exposed to a variation of this exchange [as I was] between two Christians discussing the selection of people chosen to perform in an upcoming play in their local church hall:

Christian one, indignant:  “*Sally thinks SHE’S going to be playing the lead role!”

Christian two, affronted at the very thought:   “Really!?   Did she say so?”

Christian one, warming to the support:  “Yes, we just had a HUGE argument about it this evening at rehersals.   She said pastor told her SHE could play lead and I said NO!!    I spoke to pastor and her about it and made it clear to them that god doesn’t want *Sally to have the lead role.    He wants ME to do it.”

Christian two, with breathless anticipation:  “Gosh, what did they say??   How do you know god wants you to have the lead?”

Christian one, announced with hushed reverence:             “God told me last night.”         “While I was sleeping.”

Christian two, firmly on Christian one’s side now:   “Oh.   Then you MUST have the lead.  They can’t argue with god!    He spoke to you directly and told you his wish!!”

This was a real discussion which took place in all seriousness between Christian one who was a young adult and Christian two who was a fully matured adult.   *Sally not real name.

One could debate the mental attributes and intelligence of the participants of this exchange, but the truth is that this is what religion and belief in the bible has come to; the use of religion in whichever way best benefits your desires.   All that is required is that the basic religious indoctrination be done thoroughly and let the people take it from there – their imaginative applications have no boundaries – and it keeps them and their wallets, firmly held in bondage to their weekly source of inspiration.

The only stipulation is that you evoke the name of your god to back your assertions, and you are assured of the fulfilment of your desires.

Heady stuff, and there should be no wonder why the religious cling to their ‘faith’ when it promises these personal, very flexible, benefits.
