Searching for Sugar Man. I really loved this movie, brought me to tears every time I watched it. (3 times to date) Such a great story of justice, as Rodriguez finally got the international recognition he deserved.
I decided to Google him after the third time watching the movie. I was interested to find out more about the guy, like about his wives and children and his life outside of fame.
First thing I find disappoints me. He toured Australia in the late 70's, playing to crowds of up to 15 000 people. He was popular in New Zealand and Oz the same time he was popular here, not on the same level though.
So basically the movie is sort of true but also a lie. Not a true fairy-tale as it is put across. The disappointment comes also in how the true life "actors" bought into this limited version of the truth. I mean, the powerful part of the movie is how he had only ever played at pubs before coming to South Africa twenty years later to play to crowds of 5000 odd cheering adoring fans. The movie will never be the same to me again. It seems the researchers were not very good at their work if they did not even know he toured Oz.
The movie is more a fantasy than a fairy tale. But I'll still forever love his music, and I am happy that the guy did achieve real fame from this movie. It also shows up nicely how poor the American music industry is, in that they missed properly promoting such great music. One wonders how much other great music we are denied due to their incompetence.
