Like many avid DSTV viewers, I tune in every Monday night to watch the South African version of the popular UK "reality" show, Come Dine With Me.
What I have realised though, is that our country scrapes the bottom of the barrel when it comes to finding participants for this show. Either that, or a great deal of the population are rude alcoholics with below-average intelligence. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the show to the point of addiction, but when it comes to dinner parties with hosts who are too drunk to cook, grown people who admit to believing in aliens & fairies and plain obnoxious, un-mannered behaviour - I have to wonder what went wrong. Couldn't the producers find any nice, normal people who don't foget their guests' names after a few too many toots, or who actually know how to pronounce the dishes that they serve?
The bitchy remarks away from the other guests' prying ears make me wonder if South Africans really are the friendly nation that we're portrayed to be.
On the other hand, as contrived as it seems to be, it is a very entertaining way to spend an hour of the evening. I suppose as with all "reality" programmes, the participants are auditioned and conditioned to behave the way they do. At least, I hope so.
