Computer just became a board member of a company!

17 May 2014, 18:15
A Hong Kong company just appointed a machine to its board of directors. Yes, you read that right, but you welcome to read it again.

I knew this was coming I just didn’t think it would happen this year. I guess this is proof that the rate of technological advancement cannot be plotted on a graph and easily predicted.

Indeed machines have been part of the workforce for a long time now, but never have I thought that so soon a machine could assume the responsibilities of a Director.

The company, Deep Knowledge Ventures, was quoted saying “the machine would act as an equal member of the board”.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m thrilled with this development. It bolsters what I have been talking about for years, except I never thought it would happen so soon.

It appears the saying “I am only human” is significantly impacting on humans, negatively. One of the reasons given for this appointment is the element of human error – I know and you probably knew that too.

As humans, our decisions are influenced by a number of factors including emotion, the one thing that hinders the majority of humans from fully realising their potential.

Come to think of it, machines are deliberately limiting our ability to realize that full potential. I mean when last did you try memorizing the most important contacts or vital information in your life? Yeah! I also can’t remember, let me check my phone though, I’m sure its recorded somewhere in there.

From the forefront it seems like the machine only replaced one individual, the board member. In actual fact it replaces a number of people, for obvious reasons this information cannot be printed on the front page of course. All the people that were responsible for due diligence and surveying data are now obsolete. I’m talking high earners with all the right credentials, gone!

I say well done to this company for taking the initiative. It’s a brave move. I am more impressed though, by the company that developed the machine, Aging Analytics. True pioneers.

I still say the world belongs to the programmers. They got the power to design, develop, implement and manage that that makes these machines what they are.

So, in all fairness, the appointment of this machine to the board of directors didn’t take away any jobs, it actually just replaced one redundant skillset with another, more relevant, in the form of the workforce at Aging Analytics.

This takes me back to my article of May 13, titled “Do you like my house? I printed it myself! Come on in and see!” in which I discussed the impacts of technological advances and our obliviousness to those.

But then again, we are only humans!I didn’t mean to startle Data Analysts, Financial Advisors, Investment Advisors, Auditors…….

Thanks for reading!
