Oh what a sad, sad day! My faith in mankind given another serious dent! My daughter and I were in a local supermarket when we were accosted by this rather decrepit looking young man. He looked seriously unwashed, and spoke a real working class Afrikaans. His approach was unique in the sense that he didn’t ask for money, or anything for himself, but pulled at my heartstrings with the sad tale of his 6 month old hungry baby at home.
“Jammer om te pla oom, maar kan oom my asseblief help!”
“I’m not asking for anything for myself, but could you possibly help me to buy a small tin of baby formula. We have nothing to feed the baby, and I’ve been unemployed for months now. I’ll come and wash your car, work in your garden, anything, but please sir, please help my baby!”
This all happened while we were standing at the sushi counter. How can I possible swallow down my very expensive Japanese dinner knowing somewhere near there is a small babe suffering from hunger pains? Who can refuse this poor man help? It will be completely inhumane to turn my back on a suffering little baby! The poor guy, he doesn’t ask for money or anything for himself, he is painfully pleading for me to help his suffering little child! As a fellow father, and simply as a human being, I was compelled to help him feed his child.
I walked over to the baby goods aisle and got him a tin of baby formula, a packed of nappies, and a few other things. Not realising I’m stacking his trolley with close to R500 worth of goodies. I paid for the lot, and the dude disappeared, leaving me rather broke, but feeling truly altruistic and heroic for helping a poor child and saving, at least this one little baby, the awfulness of hunger. My thoughts were filled with all the other suffering little children thinking what we as a society can, and should, do to safe children the indignity and pain of hunger.
Sadly, via the “nanny network” I had to learn that this specific character is well known at the local taxi rank for flogging baby goods at a largely discounted price. The piece of shit is clever enough to know, no right thinking human being will let a hungry babe suffer. Knowing human nature, and our collective weakness for little children, he scams unsuspecting do-gooders to buy him piles of baby stuff, which he duly sells for cash at the taxi rank.
The bastard! If I ever see him again I’m going to beat R500 worth of crap out of him. Any sick bastard that use the suffering of innocence as a vehicle to lie and steal, should be beaten up!
Please look out for this master scam artist. He is a mid twenties Afrikaans speaking white male shithead, operating in the Joburg northwest, Randburg/Roodepoort area. If he does accost you in a supermarket with his well rehearsed performance of the down and out desperate father, kick his arse immediately! He is a liar who is going to scam you out of hundreds of rand, because you too will feel humanly obliged to help to feed the poor hungry baby. The baby doesn’t exist, and all the stuff you buy him will be sold at the taxi rank for cash!
If you feel morally obligated to help feed hungry children, and we should all do it, please do so via a recognised charity organisation, and please be aware of liars and scam artists that is playing on your emotions!
