We have just won another test series in rather unique circumstances. The final day at the Wanderers, Jaques Kallis announcing his retirement and the Sub-Continent type pitch in Durban. Well done to SA.
But, What I feel and have always felt, Ever since the 98 World cup, South Africa lacks belief in our role as a leader in the Cricket World.
Let me elaborate, Having self belief is arguably more important than talent. Without self belief, Achieving anything is impossible. We all use it to earn a living.
It is a fundamental part of human nature.
What the current Test Side has managed to do is great.
But, Do they feel that they belong ? Deep down in your
gut, You know your own resolve. I think that there are
are instances where South Africa feels inferior.
But, That is my own opinion. As a fan of Many Sports
I see this concept in others. Sebastian Vettel has that belief
that he deserves to win because he is at the top of his game, So to speak. He is a Leader in his sport and he
The only reason I believe this is that every ICC tournament
SA enters, The Talent in out team seems to go on a Sunday
drive and does not always show up for the game.
The problem is further compounded when ever the team fails at these Tournaments. Just remember. We won Gold at one of the Commonwealth games under Pollock. What was different there ? A feeling of belonging as part of a team of Sportsman in many different fields. Comfort in
numbers and a almost rebellious nature.
I guess the point I am trying to make is when South Africa
is on the field, Believe that you deserve to be there. Show a little arrogance when you have the best bowlers and Batsman in the world. Treat your opponent with disdain and believe that you are better than them.
Out Sportsman are leaders in their fields. Jody Sheckter, Els and co, The star Olympic Swimmers. The Springboks who have gone on to win two World Cups. All of them have the belief that they are leaders and role models. South African Cricket is no different. Forget thee wounds and emotional scarring from the past. Just believe.
