Crime in Mexico

01 February 2013, 12:01

It is difficult to compare the crime rate in Mexico to that of the United States.  Because stats on the Drug war are rather unreliable and seem to be estimated most of the time and varying from 47,000 deaths to 60,000 deaths. These deaths seldom go through the legal channels and are hence lost. The official population of Mexico is 112 336 537 where as the population of the United States is a staggering 311 591  917.  This means that the United States population is 2,773 greater than Mexico and 1,58 greater than Brazil. It must be understood too that a country like Mexico does not have the expertise to do proper population census which may skew information of the population.

Crime rate measured for Mexico and the United States is calculated  per 100,000  inhabitants.

Drug trafficking plays a major role in the flow of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana transported between Latin America and the United States.  Drug trafficking and organised crime have also been a source of violent crime.  It must be borne in mind, too, that  Mexican crime, especially crime generated by drugs or as a result of drugs is couples to international crime

Mexico’ city inner core has about 8 million people: About the same as New York city.  Mexico’s city police force is only two thirds the size of New Yorks City’s , and is organised into several ill-co-ordinated  forces.

The United States is a lucrative market for illegal drugs. The UN estimates that 90% of all cocaine sold in the United States originated in South America. And is smuggled though Mexico.  Mexico is the largest supplier of Marijuana and the second largest source of heroin. The majority of methamphetamines sold in the united States is made in  Mexico.

According to the 7th and 8th surveys of the United Nations, It will be seen that crime rates in Mexico from 2000 to 2004  per 100, 000 inhabitants. The list is available on Wikipedia.  However it was compared to the United States for the 2004 year.  Surprisingly the list contains 12 aspects of crime and The United States  is ahead of Mexico  on 6 aspects.   Murder US  5,62,  Mexico 2, 58.

Aggravated assault US  310,14,  Mexico 186,68,  Rape 32,99,  Mexico 14,26,

Theft  Mexico  112,47    United States 2445,80,

Automobile theft, Mexico 139,86,  United States  432,12

So far it is not possible to differentiate between drug runner and the every-day criminal because the ranks, over a period of time is being decimated while that of the ordinary criminal may be increased.  As stated earlier the death rate of the drug war is about 60,000.
