DA-Agang: A PR disaster

29 January 2014, 14:25

Reggie Makgoba
I think from a PR perspective the merger between Agang and DA is simply a "political miscarriage" and could have been handled differently. Mamphela Ramphele, DA presidential candidate and a celebrated anti-apartheid activist, should have properly communicated the decision to join the 'inept' DA with the party's constituencies to advocate for buy-in before making such an ill-informed announcement that shocked many blacks. From the look of things, the merger was unwisely and prematurely conceived and Agang members may feel betrayed by their unpredictable leader and decide to join other parties. You cannot detach race from our politics - considering our sorry past. The former Agang leader should have pondered this dilemma and devised an approach that would ensure that all its members join the DA. Without being satisfactorily convinced, many would not vote for the DA on the basis of race. Simply put, the party is associated with apartheid and white supremacy among the black community.

I support any party that challenges the ANC monopoly. May be it will help reduce corruption and maladministration in government. The poor bastard has lost traction and moral compass by allowing corruption to continue unchallenged within its ranks
