DA's 'succesful' campaign could have been better

12 May 2014, 05:30
The Democratic Alliance's growth in this year's elections was nothing short of impressive. This despite the potential threat posed by the radical left movement, the EFF. Before I commence, I would like to congratulate the DA in the Western Cape on a job well done, not only retaining the province, but winning with an outright majority; proof of the confidence thst the people of the Westrrn Cape have in the current government.

But I'm not wholly happy with the DA's performance in Limpopo. I am of the opinion that the DA could have done better than the 6% they received in the province. The DA's campaign was mainly dominated by Nkandla and how much of a fraud Zuma is, something I will explain to you as being widely ineffective for the DA's course in this traditional ANC stronghold.

After seeing ANC party agents handing out T-shirts outside the polling station where I cast my first ever vote for real jobs and a million internships, I decided to ask some of the voters outside the station after they had cast their votes.I managed to get answers from 54 of them.

1. The first question I asked was about the Nkandla report and what they thought about it.Unsurprisingly, only 12 knew and understood what the Nkandla report was about. The others knew some of it, but mentioned that it's too common(Limpopo having had a relatively similar incident under former premier Cassel Mathale's adminidtration with very little consequence)

2. The second question was about their opinion of the Western Cape. This time, only 7 gave solid opinions about the Western Cape. The majority knew DA ran it but thought it was the '2 Worlds in 1' that was later echoed by Lindiwe Sisulu on ANN7 yesterday.

3. My third question was about their general view on the DA as an organisation.21 answered that it is a pro-white movement, some going as far as claiming it would reinstate apartheid if given power. 33 disagreed but gave mild opinions.

4. My fourth and last question was about the ANC and what they thought of it.Majority of them admired the ANC but exactly 48 people were unimpressed with the corruption by ANC officials both locally and provincially. 34 saying they still voted for the ANC because no one gave them impressive-enough promises, and thus opted to vote for the devil they knew best.

People are not very happy with the ANC and the roughly 64% turn out in voters in a province that usually has a higher number of voters is proof of that.
As for pro-white, pro-middle class and ignoring of the poor. Coincidence or ANC's doing? It's chickens in marriage but at least one can be openly DA without fear of being labelled a sellout.

My opinion is not that the DA has no potential votes in Limpopo(this can also apply to Mpumalanga), but have instead failed to sell their dream to the people. Perhaps bashing the ANC and its leadership instead of making bold new promises, was a case of mistaken priorities.
