Dare to know! Have the courage to use your reason

25 February 2014, 10:16

“ Dare to Know! Have the Courage to Use Your Reason” (Immanuel Kant 1784)

Do you know or can you guess what corrupt drug-barons and corrupt heads-of state have in common? Let me tell you, it’s a thing called a compound! . Used as a noun it means “a fenced of area, often containing buildings,” stemming from the Malaysian “Kampong”. Another curious thing is, that these barons and heads –of –state (Pablo Escobar), Gaddafi, Saddam Husain and now the latest ex-president of Ukraine Viktor F. Janukovich, all have more or less the same tastes, i.e. the compound fences are high and armed to the teeth, but inside the compound almost paradisiacal conditions prevail.  Rare and top quality animals are bred, and some times even a private zoo is erected. The gardens inside the compound are beautiful and well tended; within the compound an ambiance of peace and tranquillity abounds. The troubles of the outside world (of course there are no real troubles with the big man at the helm), should not intrude.

Naturally the compound is composed of several buildings, as the big man needs distance, even from those dearly loved ones. A golf course is not an unknown feature of such a stately home and it goes without saying that a huge underground garage, filled with a wide variety of very expensive cars is an absolute must.

If I have not been able to convey all the details of these stately homes, let me quote from the New York Times. “It is so beautiful here,” said Svetlana Gorbenkova, one of the few Ukrainian citizens who managed to sneak into the compound of the fled, now ex-president of the Ukraine. “It’s so peaceful. But why all this for just one person? This was stolen from us. It’s now obvious how much he stole… Why did he not give anything to the people? When he was running for President, one of his slogans was “I will listen to everyone of you”

But he didn’t listen to anyone!

Well, well, I can only quote Immanuel Kant (1783) “Dare to know! Have the courage to use your reason.
