‘Hello!’ said a monkey, snug in his cage
‘I know we look like one another.”
But he held up a book by Charles Darwin and said,
‘It seems that I’m my keeper’s brother.’
The other one looked at him, rolling his eyes
And said, ‘What an idjit you are!’
He picked up the book and looked at the photo
And swung himself up by a bar
‘You know, there might some truth in all this.’
As he studied the photo up close
‘He looks a lot like your cousin Mufafa
Except a he’s a lot more morose.’
‘Mufafa morose!?’ said the first in surprise
‘He’s the happiest monkey I know!’
‘I know,’ said the first monkey, shaking his head
‘But to him it would come as a blow.
To find out that all of these years have he’s been human
Or even worse, part of a chain
Or even much worse, be a link, just a link
The shame of it would cause much pain.’
The first one swung up to the perch near his friend
And together they studied the book
They turned their heads first this way up and then down
But no matter how earnest they’d look
The hair was like theirs, but the face it was not
And the ears were much smaller than theirs
And the hair on the face didn’t reach to the eyes
And the nose wasn’t covered in hairs
‘So this man, this Charles Darwin, says we weren’t created
By God, but then if that is true…’
He looked all around at the bars and his cage
‘Then we’re better off here at the zoo.’
