The argument for how far we have come as a nation in relation to our rights can be measured in the reaction to the painting depicting our naked president ,now if you take the statue of David you would notice that he is depicted naked as well ,at the time 1504 there were no mass actions of Jewish people insisting in the removal of the statue ,you did not see people defacing the statue no Michelangelo was rewarded and commissioned to do more work .here is a example ![]()
The Last Judgment created between 1536 and 1541. Saint Bartholomew semi naked but still it is situated on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel was commissioned by Pope Clement VII, mmm yet you didn’t get Catholics protesting for a naked man a saint being depicted and put in the Chappell ,and Michelangelo got even braver and did this one

Now clearly ignudo is also showing a penis we see and this is hanging in the Sistine chapel and yet again people didn’t deface the painting .
Maybe the difference between the two paintings “the spear and lets say ignudo is when circumstances of the time’s I mean people in 1500 ad were more tolerant than today I mean even the catholic church let a known homosexual paint their Sistine Chapel with pictures of naked men. mmm if Michelangelo was alive today the church would not even look at him
So were did we go backwards ? I mean Bret Murry is no Michelangelo and the spear is not the best painting in the world ,but yet it is still art ! Defacing it is a crime just like it would be a crime to cut of the penis on the David statue .
Let’s say someone defaced one of Michelangelo paintings there would be a uproar of note because his work is priceless and irreplaceable, also exquisite. and it at the end of the day is art ,that was it was done in the 1500 ‘s ad left for us to appreciate 512 years later .
Who’s to say in 512years time “the spear “ would not be appreciated by all ,who is to say that Brett Murrey is not the next Michelangelo .
I personally feel that in 512 years we wont even remember who JZ was cause there will be no art with his face on it . except for Zaperos cartoons , does he really want to be remembered with a shower head .
We are giving this art to much attention on a political level, in the since that this debacle was handled so badly it could have consciences ,
What we should have done if we dint like it is to stop looking at it ,but we defaced it ,leaving artist in a pickle. If we destroy art now society will not enable artist to express themselves this will lead us back to the dark ages were we will end up with artist censoring themselves
Michelangelo was a renascence period artist and look what he achieved, aren’t we supposed to be an a period of African Renascence
