Dealing with my Problem

13 July 2014, 22:00
Shortly after 5pm last night, sitting in the cave coldness at Smugglers, just off Witkoppen, I was wishing for a heater.

I mentioned this to the friendly waiter whilst sipping on my beverage. He was instructed by the manager that the heaters would only be switched on at 7pm.

Soon a couple arrived at a table near me . They too huddled in the cold . The charming , pro-active waiter, seated them and then set about turning on the heater .

I cheered audibly. Appears the manager , in all his glory , commanding that the heater be left alone. Humpf. I told the waiter that I would be leaving once my drink was finished unless the heater was switched on.

He approached the manager and informed him of my decision to leave. I overheard him saying that the heater could only be turned on at 7pm because it costs him R100,00 per night.

Then I heard if I wanted to leave , well then that was my problem. Tempting as it was to say something , I didn't bother.

So there was I - disgruntled , freezing along with the romantic couple. I was resolved to leave. Through the doors came two gentlemen - two regulars.

The manager swiftly made himself available , guiding them to a table next to the romantic couple and promptly proceeded to turn the heater on , not even 5.30pm.

Now do I say this or not ? here goes - I'm upset by what I overheard about myself, and the manager's attitude.

Here's the thing though , although I am loathe to say it : I'm white, the young romantic couple were black and the two regulars were white.

My anger stems from how that young romantic couple were treated , being left to be unheated until 7pm, that is until the two white guys arrived, them being warmly greeted and immediately heated.

So , Mr Manager, you are quite right. This is my problem. If I don't like the way you run the Smugglers pub - it is my problem. So now I'm dealing with my problem. I'm starting to feel better , just as I did last night , on arriving at the warm and friendly Baron on Main, directly after I left Smugglers.
